5 out of 5 stars Top Quality & Performance!   July 14, 2008

I can't begin to describe how cool this laptop is. It is all you need for personal or business work. I have an Acer Desktop with 1 GB of RAM and 100 GB Memory. This little guy has 4 GB of RAM and an Intel Duo Core Processor (that's basically at least twice as fast as my desktop) and 250 GB on the hard drive! Those items are critical for good, fast performance. The keyboard is perfectly typical in its layout and the mouse pad is actually sleek and slightly indented, allowing you to seamlessly run your finger over the metal. The two button pads allow for more functions. It is completely intuitive and although I prefer Windows XP Home over Vista Home (XP is faster), you can't get around that nowadays. It comes preloaded with everything you need and I actually uninstalled some unnecessary programs. I took out the Norton Virus software and put in Windows Live One Care (my preference on quality and ease of use).

There are lots of standards that used to be extras, like the Web Cam, which transmits, records, takes pictures, etc. When you move around, it is a bit blurry, but for ordinary transmission it is right up there with most in quality. It also contains a DVD/CD burner and player, which are very fast, even though it seems terribly fragile when you open it. I like being able to have the choice of Cable DSL, dial-up and Wireless Internet. When at home I just plug in the Ethernet wire and when traveling it is very easy to get a signal just about anywhere I go, (call your service provider to get the pass code for wireless service). There is the media card insert, two USB ports and lots of standard software. You can read all of that here on the web page, but the look and feel (the keyboard is very easy on the hands and wrists) is sleek. It also comes with a one-year warranty with the option to buy more.

Here's a little secret. Don't buy past the standard one-year warranty, as Dell will contact you within six to nine months to offer you an extended warrantee at a lesser cost. They want your business. Why pay more? I suggest getting that warrantee when it is offered. Also, a good, secure, padded carry-bag is a must. "Targus" makes great bags that are relatively inexpensive. One last note: Dell has one of the best reputations for quality computers and they have home service, meaning they come to YOU! Have fun!

5 out of 5 stars It does the trick   November 22, 2008

While I had heard more than a few complaints about the quality and longevity of Dell laptops, I recently needed one quickly and as cost efficiently as possible. After some comparative shopping, it became clear that Dell could fulfill these requirements better than their competitors.

I ordered the Inspiron 1525 with the exact same specifications as those listed on this page, with the exception of a 150GB hard drive, directly from Dell (I would recommend doing the same as, at the time of this posting, the price dealing through Dell directly is almost three hundred dollars cheaper). I was not expecting much for the price, but I have been pleasantly surprised. It should be mentioned that I am by no means a computer expert and I do not use my laptop for anything special outside of work and surfing the internet. However, I do utilize some statistics and data charts that my last laptop labored over while this computer seems to remain unfazed and unburdened. Aside from its speed and power, which I am in no way disappointed with, I also find it to be aesthetically pleasing. The screen is larger and more vivid than I had anticipated, the overall design is sleek, and it will pass as professional. All of this said, it is a good laptop, good looking, handles what I throw at it, and priced to sell at the moment if purchased through Dell.

As for the apparent negatives, I have convinced myself that I have only heard so many complaints because I know so many more individuals that own Dells as opposed to any other brand, and have been comforted by a recommendation from a friend who is also a local college's IT supervisor.

4 out of 5 stars I had problems at first sent the laptop to dell and now its been over a year and runs flawless   April 10, 2010

Although I got this laptop w/o the webcam and with 3gb of ram for a steal about a year ago for $400, I have to say this has been a flawless product for me. I did have a lot of problems with the trackpad at first it was defective and to get it fixed was very easy, I went onto the dell website, used the web based support and the issue was taken care of very promptly. They rushed an empty box to my house with 2 day air which allowed me to send the computer to their facility for free and about a week to a week and a half later I got it back and the trackpad works fine now. As for overheating, I have never experienced any. I do not know if this is a vista problem, I formatted the computer off the bat and now I use the laptop with Ubuntu and on the side Windows XP for my electrical engineering programs. I have had no other problems with this machine, I just wish it had a better than 2.5 hour battery life time.

4 out of 5 stars Not a rotten computer   June 17, 2009

I have this model except without the webcam and with 3 gbs of RAM. I got it March 09. The mousepad tends to stop working, but suspending the computer (by closing the lid) and then bringing it right back on fixes the problem. Dell's customer support is very unhelpful. I restarted my computer after having it for two months and it wouldn't turn on. It said that there was a problem and it couldn't self fix itself. My mom called tech support for me and they wouldn't help her. Said she should reboot the hard drive. When she told them that wasn't an option because I had stuff I couldn't lose, they told me to go pay someone to fix it. I called a computer technician that I know and he was able to fix it for me. A virus got on and my virus program isolated a file needed to turn the computer on. While this isn't Dell's fault I was very upset with their "I don't really care" attitude. If you are going to sell a product you should be prepared to back it up.
However, for the money I paid for this through Dell (I got it on sale for $649) I think it is worth it. But I'm sort of waiting for something bad to happen again.
It's great for minor gaming (I play some war games on it to and it runs fine), internet use, school work, and it has enough space for my Itunes library and pictures.

3 out of 5 stars Good computer, but it over heats   April 23, 2009

This is not a "lap" top. Every time it is on my lap it overheats. I have to put it on the corner of the table so it can "blow off steam." The fan goes on a lot because the ventilation vents are on the bottom. Other than that, it is OK.
