| Customer Reviews: Works Flawlessly, Great Quality!! July 10, 2010 usvlaw I purchased this as a law student and needed a laptop with a clear vibrant extra large screen. After looking for a while I'd decided on the Dell Studio 17. It was the perfect fit for my needs! I've used this for over two months now with no problems. The keyboard has a firm responsive feel with a sleek touch sensitive illuminated media buttons. The integrated sound powered by JBL is a fantastic bonus with a depth of range and fidelity usually only found in higher quality external amplified speakers, something normally bought separately. Also, I use my laptop for accounting and math work, so the numerical keypad is a must...this is probably the best quality laptop I've ever owned, I'm very impressed and satisfied with it, kudos!!
Motherboard is defective by design January 31, 2010 Marshall Masters (Northern CA United States) 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
We purchased a Studio 1745 last month. The computer would lock up and logging in was impossible as the mouse and keyboard stop working. The problem we learned is that the motherboard is defective by design. Here is the actual online chat with the Dell tech about this problem.
01/30/2010 06:00:06PM Marshall Masters: "so how does the bios get corrupted like this?"
01/30/2010 06:01:37PM Agent (Bhupinder_205926): "It was nit corrupted, Windows or Dell updates might have changed the functionality of the keyboard."
01/30/2010 06:02:22PM Marshall Masters: "ok. i see a lot of folk having the same problem with the model on the message boards. is this a recurring problem for this model?"
01/30/2010 06:03:52PM Agent (Bhupinder_205926): "Marshall, Sometimes when the system is left powered on for a long time, due to the static charge this issue occurs with the key board and mouse."
How do you fix this. You have to hose your BIOS settings and reinstall the default variant as the BIOS configuration in the EPROM is toasted by the least amount of normal static. If you're a geek this is pain in the butt. If you're a computer lightweight, it is pure grief.
This is a fatal design flaw in the motherboard of this computer. Think of it this way. The BIOS is like the stem of your brain. Nothing works without it. Unlike a heart, lungs, liver, etc. it cannot be transplanted. Simply put, a PC with a bad BIOS design such as this is like a baby born with Spinal Bifida. Dell never offered to replace the motherboard, which means a cover up of a fatal flaw. Meanwhile, the message boards are loaded with victims of this design flaw cover up.
