Although it's not advertised as compatible with the Dell Dimension 5100, I was able to replace the power supply in about 10 minutes with this and it fit perfectly and works perfectly. Really easy, and I'm not highly skilled in hardware installations.
My Dell was dead - when you pushed the power button literally nothing happened. The only sign of life was a green light on the motherboard. Google searches were inconclusive but pointed to either a bad mother board or a bad power supply unit (PSU). I decided to try this new PSU as opposed to spending $500 or so on a new computer, and I'm happy I did... our computer is up and running.
One note - the old power supply on my computer said it was rated to 305 watts and this one is 350 watts. Near as I can tell, as long as you buy the minimum wattage, it doesn't matter if your new PSU goes up higher - that just means it can supply more power if it's needed.

Good replacement part for Dell Dimension 8400 September 5, 2009

This was a perfect replacement for the original part that failed on my Dell Dimension 8400. It was very easy to install. So far, it appears that it works as well if not better than the original. As mentioned in the other review, it is wisper quite. The fan is hardly audible. From doing some research online, it appears this is a better product than the refurbished part that Dell sells through its website, and the cost difference is negligible.

If you research this part, it's common that Dell's will eventually need replacement because the fan gets loud and eventually starts and stops (like mine) and some fans eventually completely stop spinning. This particular fan is connected to the whole power supply. At least they make the power supply stronger than the original which is nice. This part was a perfect fit, very easy to swap out and replug all the power plugs, and the fan is so quiet I had to go back there with a flashlight to make sure it was spinning!
The ONLY reason I gave it 4 stars vs 5 is because I've only had it a couple of months and I don't know if it will last (knocks on wood this will last years). If it lasts years, I fully give the product and the company that sent it 5 stars.
Quick shipping, competitive pricing, HAD IT IN STOCK which even Dell didn't have it in stock (I told you Dell's original version of this part breaks down a lot!), and a perfect fit. Saved me from having to buy a new computer (whew!).
